Mobile mammography center continues operation in Talas

07.07.2022

1,400 women have been examined on a digital mammography system in Talas region for eight months.

The equipment was purchased in Germany in 2020 for the project "Breast and cervical cancer early detection in the Kyrgyz Republic using a mobile mammography center".

The unique equipment for Kyrgyzstan was delivered to Talas region in September 2021. The sponsor of the project was Alliance Altyn. The examination was highly popular because breast cancer poses one of the most serious risks to women's health.

"Such system became available in Talas region for the first time ever. Before that, women had to travel to Bishkek, spend money on travel and examination," explains Aizhamal Shambetova, Director of Talas Regional Center for Family Medicine, coordinator of the Ministry of Health.

Initially, the mammography system was operated in Bekmoldo community, then in Talas and Kyzyl-Adyr. Back in October and January, the mammography system failed twice due to voltage swings. Necessary spare parts were ordered and repairs were made. In May, the mammography system was restarted.

"The breast exam is free, and women are happy. The equipment has already detected some early stage cancer and helped patients to take timely measures to save own lives," A. Shambetova emphasized.
