In 2015, Alliance Altyn obtained a license to develop the Jeruy gold deposit. Since then, the company has been implementing best practice at the site. This applies not only to gold mining, but also to the measures taken for the development of the entire region.

Alliance Altyn devotes special attention to environmental protection and care for nature, providing tremendous amounts for this cause. The publication covers the company’s recent projects for environmental protection.

Best Practice

Environmental compliance is one of Alliance Altyn’s priorities. The company has ensured that its operation has a minimum impact on the local environment and has invested heavily for this goal.

Ore from Jeruy deposit is processed at the Talas Gold Processing Plant; the waste is stored at tailings dumps in an endorheic hollow. It is equipped to ensure the environmental protection against negative impact. In 2022, the ecological and toxicological, and physical and chemical inspection confirmed the tailings’ fifth class of environmental hazard. According to the calculation, instrumental, and experimental methods, they are practically safe.

Alliance Altyn maintains regular environmental monitoring near the mine and in adjacent territories: radiation, air, soil, flora, fauna, surface water and bottom sediments inspections. The company’s expenditures for this purpose last year amounted to KGS 3.3 million.

Alliance Altyn utilizes AMC CR 1000 automated weather station to collect and process weather parameters in order to update physical climate risks. The company has spent KGS 626 thousand for its maintenance in 2022.

Care for the region

As a company strictly adhering to the principles of corporate social responsibility, Alliance Altyn directs part of its resources to preserve and support the ecological balance of the region, which includes protection of water and biological resources, air and soil.

In 2022, capital expenditures of the company and its development fund for environmental protection amounted to KGS 97.3 million, and the operating costs totaled KGS 87.2 million. Environmental payments reached KGS 1.2 billion.

The largest project in 2022 was the commissioning of local facilities for domestic wastewater treatment of the gold-processing complex. The facility’s capacity is 65 m3 of wastewater per 24 hours; it prevents the wastewater from entering the nature. The treatment facility costs KGS 70.2 million.

Alliance Altyn implements environmental measures beyond the Jeruy mine. As such, a modern waste separation line was built in Talas at the approved landfill site. It allows to separate waste and recycle up to 80 % of it. Alliance Altyn Development Fund provided KGS 6 million for the project.

The company contributes not only to pollution reduction, but also to the improvement of biodiversity in the region. In 2022, Alliance Altyn Development Fund funded the purchase of 35 red deer amounting to KGS 2.5 million. The animals were brought from Altai Territory, Russia, and were released in Besh-Tash natural reserve.

Another KGS 1.3 million went to the construction of the biothermal pit for decontamination of animal carcasses and rapid destruction of a variety of microbes. The Talas district cattle breeders have benefited from this facility.

More than investor

In 2023, Alliance Altyn maintains the robust measures. In January, it paid almost KGS 2 million for the use of surface water for production needs. The charge was agreed with the Talas Regional Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic and directed to the budget. In accordance with the License Agreement, contributions were made to the restoration fund.

In the past, the locals reacted negatively to the potential development of Jeruy gold mine. This was caused by a negative reputation of some mining companies in other regions of the Kyrgyz Republic. But the things changed when Alliance Altyn came to the Jeruy site. The company has proved that it strictly complies with the republican legislation, local and international environmental standards.
